No, Elphaba doesn't reference the socks in the musical... though it would be kinda cool if they did. I mean, how hard would it have been to add striped socks to Michelle Federer's second act costume?

About the Witch's song, that had to have been original. Because of the Witch using the socks & shoes line I know that the RSC script was used. It is now common that original songs are written to give the Witch a little bit of singing time. Some productions just give her a little bit of the Jitterbug to sing, but some give her an all out solo musical number.

No adaption based on the movie has a "Built-In" song for the Witch. Most songs given to her are written specifically for a production, but she often winds up w/ part of the Jitterbug sequence(Cut from the movie, used in the play) I'm not an expert at music so I couldn't tell you whether it would be alto, soprano, etc. There is a CD of Wizard of Oz on Tour which does have the Witch singing, if you want, I can direct you to a 30sec. clip of the Witch singing on Best Buy's website.

Oh god, the Jitterbug. Colleen and I, we go way back on this. You should ask her to rap it for you, she's really great. I would always complain about Elphaba not having a song when, in fact, not only does she have a song, but a whole dance number. Teehee. They so should have kept it in the movie, eh Colleen? -gyps

Actually the Witch doesn't dance at all, just singing while gazing in her crystal ball. Also, in the version of the song cut from the film, the Witch doesn't have any part in the singing. You will also notice the line "I sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them!" in the film, indicating the song. www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=150461&skuId=3513335&type=product Follow that link to hear Eartha Kitt(as the Witch) sing a section of the Jitterbug.

I don't know anything about original songs, but if it is the Jitterbug, I would say mezzo. I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure it doesn't go any higher than an E below high C, which is actually Glinda's highest note and the highest note in the show...or at least it was for the version we did. Hope that helps. =P Michelle

check a local music shop, it can be bought for about $12 at stores that still have it in stock, the CD stopped pressing in 2000. It's worth the $12.
