Okay, little blonde me, I have a few questions about pronunciations in the novel...here they are.
Liir -- Is it like "Lur"? Thats how I say it.
Manek -- Is it "Manic", like the word? (Just another manic monday hehe)
Elphaba...I can just not figure this one out. Jk

Liir is pronounced Leer - it's on the book on tape. Original I thought it was like Liar.
Manek, I pronounce man-ek. llam
As far as Elphaba, for a long time I thought it was el-FAY-buh.
I was thinking about Fiyero once... I've pronounced his name right all along - fee-YAIR-oh. But I was thinking, maybe Gregory Maguire originally intended for it to be pronounce figh-yeer-oh so it would rhyme perfectly with "hero" for "Yero my hero."

I was thinking about that Fiyero thing too. And my friend's mom always says "El-phay-bee" and we are like ITS ELPHABA!!!! And my dad say Guylinda once. lol

On the whole 'Elphaba' thing, I think it's 'El-fa-ba' because her name comes from the initials of Baum...L.F.B. Elphaba.

On the whole 'Elphaba' thing, I think it's 'El-fa-ba' because her name comes from the initials of Baum...L.F.B. Elphaba. Hehe, the whole Elphaba pronunciation thing was a joke. I'm not that dense. Lol |

What about Avaric? Is it pronounced EVeric or AVaric? Because I know they use the name in the musical once, and I was never sure how to pronounce his name.

When I first heard about the show, I thought it was pronounced, "El-FAH-bah". "Elphaba, why couldn't you stay calm for once?..." Well, I'm an idiot. |

That's Defying Gravity. I figured it out from the booklet in the CD:
"In Wicked - the novel first, and now the musical - the Wicked Witch of the West has a name: Elphaba. It's pronounced EL-phaba, with the pronunciation on the first of the three syllables, the way DOR-othy is (and for that matter, MAR-garet and HAM-ilton, too, though that's pure coincidence). Elphaba, a name derived from the initials of the auth of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Lyman Frank Buam. L. F. B. Elphaba."
