Hey everyone
Well I am finally moving to NYC this Saturday, "... to make my life and make my way". I am from Texas so this is a huge change for me, so if any of you New Yorkers have any advise, tips, survival guides, anything and everything is welcomed!

Buy lots of warm clothes - jeans, long sleeve shirts, a heavy jacket.
I don't live in NYC but Philly is pretty close so temperatures tend to be the same.
Learn the Metro system the best you can - knowing how to get where you have to go (schooling, jobs, etc) always helps.
Avoid tourist traps for the most part but because the entire city is one this might be a little difficult.

I would also suggest planning what you're going to do in great detail so you have a sense of where you're going before you get there. That way you won't look like a tourist stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to look at a map. Plan routes and methods of travel. I know this helps me wherever I go, and it makes everything go much more smoothly.

Wait, are you just going on a trip, or moving there. Because you said moving there, but it sounds like people have been giving tips for a vacation. Sorry, if I'm like the only person who's missing something...

Welcome to NY!!
the best 411 i can give it: - be agressive, but not rude (aka on the crowded streets/ cab drivers) - be cautious (rigshaw driver will rip you off- - it's happened to me) -keep a warm jacket/scarf/gloves etc for the winter. It gets very cold. - learn to take the subways, it's not that hard and saves TONS of time and lastly: -enjoy, it's the greatest city in the world!

I wish i lived in New York City i'm still trying to convince my parents to let me go with them to new york in august to see Wicked for the first time it's been so hard so i taped a calendar of show times and days on the back of my desk hutch. i just want to go for a couple of days before i return for another couple of days before i leave for france it's not like they have the show in france so i'd have to wait a year before i got to see it. Emphasis on the warm winter clothes bit. I know how to dress for cold weather, and I still got windburn in places covered by clothes (not those places-- get your mind out of the gutter!) from walking around the city all day in January.

He he, the title cracked me up! ;D Yeah, it can get pretty cold, especially by windchill. Hats are always good!
