I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but either way:
What musical/play do you think had the best/most powerful opening? For me I'd say Little Shop of Horrors, definately. Closely followed by Beauty and the Beast.

Phantom of the Opera or Rent. Rent's got an amazingly hot, angsty guitarist casually walking onstage. ON the other hand, despite my signature banner, Phantom's chandalier swinging over the audience is pretty much impossible to be.
I've never seen LSoH professionally done, though, and considering I may have seen BatB with the OBC (I really don't remember- I was that little), I really don't remember the opening.
And because this is a fun thread...Hairspray's opening, where you see Tracy Turnblad's bed from overhead, was pretty fun, but then again that whole show is.

I like the opening to Once On this island.... with the thunderstorm...... its preety cool I agree!!! Once on This Island is so awesome. I also really like the opening to Fiddler on the Roof, just because it's so traditional (no pun intended) but really big and cool anyways. Also, 42nd has one of the best openings. It starts (if you don't know) with people talking about how Julian Marsh is doing a show and the audition is coming up. Then the curtain comes up to reveal a bunch of people doing this huge tap number.

Avenue Q is kinda original, what with the TV screens showing the opening theme and little cartoons.
