When I first read the book back in '96, I was listening to a lot of Kenny Loggins (much of it from the late 70's)... there's a song called 'Angelique' which always seemd to be on the playlist on my CD system, so I tended to hear it two or three times a day when first reading the book. I cannot hear it now without thinking "Elphaba".
Also, a few weeks ago I was performing at a local jazz club, and I sang the classic Bacharach tune 'Alfie'... but a number of friends in the audience were Wicked fans like me, and just as a joke I started it out with 'What's it all about... Elfie?"... but then as I continued the song, it became more poignant. We stopped laughing and everyone's eyes were like 'Hey, it almost works!'.
"What's it all about, Elfie Is it just for the moment that we live? What's it all about when you sort it out, Elfie Are we meant to take more than we give? Or are we meant to be kind? And if only fools are kind, Elfie Then I guess it is wise to be cruel And if life belongs only to the strong, Elfie What will you lend on an old golden rule? As sure as I believe There's a heaven above Elfie I know there's something much more Something even non-believers can believe in I believe in love, Elfie Without true love we just exist, Elfie Until you find the love you've missed, You're nothing, Elfie When you walk let your heart lead the way And you'll find love any day Elfie

Well, a song that reminds me of Wicked is "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel. Surprisingly enough, when Idina Menzel was in high school she played Nettie, the character who sings the song. It reminds me of the friendship that Glinda and Elphie have.
When you walk through a storm Keep your chin up high And don't be afraid of the dark. At he end of the storm Is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone, You'll never walk alone.

If you've seen GYPSY this may sound really strange but the song little lamb reminds me of I'm Not That Girl. They are both slow, and sad in way.

Two songs, both by Chantal Kreviaszuk. First Weight of the World Chantal Kreviaszuk I used to carry the weight of the world and now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly! I don't know why I was so afraid... all the time. Memories seemed to bother me.. my whole life. I used to carry the weight of the world and now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly! I used to carry the weight of the world and now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly! I don't know why I was so ashamed, such a waste of time. And I don't know who I was trying to be, all those lies. I used to carry the weight of the world, and now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly! I used to carry the weight of the world and now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly! Oh, and there's always something, or somebody right behind. Well, we're not meant to be everything. We're just a piece, so spread your wings. Oh, I don't know why I was so afraid all the time. I used to carry the weight of the world and now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly... And this one reminds me sooo much of Elphie and Fiyero Feels Like Home Changtal Kreviazuk Somethin' in your eyes, makes me wanna lose myself Makes me wanna lose myself, in your arms There's somethin' in your voice, makes my heart beat fast Hope this feeling lasts, the rest of my life If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done It feels like home to me, it feels like home to me It feels like I'm all the way back where I come from It feels like home to me, it feels like home to me It feels like I'm all the way back where I belong A window breaks, down a long, dark street And a siren wails in the night But I'm alright, 'cause I have you here with me And I can almost see, through the dark there is light Well, if you knew how much this moment means to me And how long I've waited for your touch And if you knew how happy you are making me I never thought that I'd love anyone so much It feels like home to me, it feels like home to me It feels like I'm all the way the back where I come from It feels like home to me, it feels like home to me It feels like I'm all the way back where I belong It feels like I'm all the way back where I belong

I don't know if you all have heard of the musical "Honk", but there's a song calle d"Different".It reminds me so much of Wicked!I can imagine Elphie singing it instead of the Ugly Duckling (yes it is a musical about the ugly duckling).

I had a friend who was in Honk. Anyway... A piano tune I'm playing reminds me of Wicked for the simple reason that it's a very dark piece.

There's a song from the musical "Funny Girl" called "I'm The Greatest Star." Barbra Streisand sings it soo well. It kinda reminds me of "The Wizard and I" - just one of those songs that is saying 'Hey, I'm gonna be great one day! Remember my name!'

I just heard "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from "Phantom of the Opera" and I thought about Glinda singing after Elphaba 'melts'. I think about "Don't Rain on My Parade" from "Funny Girl",too.

Alright; so this is a song by Jesse McCartney (and no, I am not a fan of the Disney-made pop-icon types, but these lyrics are pretty) and it remind me of a Yero song - or at least the chorus does for obvious reasons. It's called "Beautiful Soul."
[Chorus] [I don't want another pretty face I don't want just anyone to hold I don't want my love to go to waste I want you and your beautiful soul You're the one I wanna chase You're the one I wanna hold I wont let another minute go to waste I want you and your beautiful soul

1,000 Miles reminds me of Elphie singing about Fiyero when he's captured. I bolded the parts that really stand out.
1,000 Miles Vannessa Carlton
Makin' my way downtown, Walkin' fast, Faces pass and I'm homebound.
Starin' blankly ahead, Just makin' my way, Makin' a way through the crowd.
And I need you, And I miss you, And now I wonder...
If I could fall into the sky, Do you think time would pass me by? 'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles If I could just see you... Tonight.
It's always times like these When I think of you, And wonder if you ever think of me.
'Cause everything's so wrong And I don't belong. Livin' in your precious memory.
'Cause I need you, And I miss you, And now I wonder...
If I could fall into the sky, Do you think time would pass me by? 'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles If I could just see you... Tonight.
I, I, don't wanna let you know I, I, drown in your memory. I, I, don't wanna let this go. I, I, don't.
Makin' my way downtown, Walkin' fast, Faces pass and I'm homebound.
Starin' blankly ahead, Just makin' my way, Makin' a way through the crowd.
And I still need you, And I still miss you, And now I wonder...
If I could fall into the sky, Do you think time Would pass.. us by? 'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles If I could just see you...
oh oh
If I could fall into the sky, Do you think time would pass me by? 'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles If I could just see you.
If I could just hold you.... Tonight.
Also, Pieces of Me by Ashlee Simpson reminds me of what Yero feels when he falls for Elphie because she takes him seriously and isn't shallow.
Pieces of Me Ashlee Simpson
On a Monday, I am waiting Tuesday, I am fading And by Wednesday, I can't sleep Then the phone rings, I hear you And the darkness is a clear view Cuz you've come to rescue me
Fall... With you, I fall so fast I can hardly catch my breath, I hope it lasts
Ohhhhh It seems like I can finally rest my head on something real I like the way that feels Ohhhhh It's as if you know me better than I ever knew myself I love how you can tell All the pieces, pieces, pieces of me All the pieces, pieces, pieces of me
I am moody, messy I get restless, and it's senseless How you never seem to care
When I'm angry, you listen Make me happy it's a mission And you won't stop til I'm there
Fall... Sometimes I fall so fast When I hit that bottom Crash, you're all I have
Ohhhhh It seems like I can finally rest my head on something real I like the way that feels Ohhhhh It's as if you known me better than I ever knew myself I love how you can tell All the pieces, pieces, pieces of me
How do you know everything I'm about to say? Am I that obvious? And if it's written on my face... I hope it never goes away... yeah
On a Monday, I am waiting And by Tuesday, I am fading into your arms... So I can breathe
Ohhhhh It seems like I can finally rest my head on something real I like the way that feels Ohhhhh It's as if you've know me better than I ever knew myself I love how you can tell Ohhhhh I love how you can tell Ohhhhh I love how you can tell All the pieces, pieces, pieces of me All the pieces, pieces, pieces of me...
