And fourthly, about the whole...'first time' virgin thing...my personal opinion is that she got raped by some person/thing/whatever that we're just not hearing which exists in Maguire's little fantasy world. She had that scar-like marking on a place where the sun don't shine, after all. Wait, why do you say that? Is there evidence other than the scar type thing? Because I'm not so sure. I totally disagree with that. The Philosophy Club scene is weird, but none of us have been able to figure out what it means, so to say it's peverted is a judgement we're making without having full information about Maguire's intentions. And there is nothing peverted about Elphaba's sexual relationship with Fiyero. But I'm really curious about your rape theory, please expand!! Kat.

The Philosophy Club scene is weird, but none of us have been able to figure out what it means, so to say it's peverted is a judgement we're making without having full information about Maguire's intentions........ We all have different opinions...I respect you for posting what you think! ........And there is nothing peverted about Elphaba's sexual relationship with Fiyero. Never said there was. ;D But I'm really curious about your rape theory, please expand!! Ha, well, it's not really a theory. It's more or less likely common sense mixed with a hypothesis of my interpretation(sp?) of the book. I mean my common sense, not anyone else's. It does make sense. Well, to tell you the truth, I kinda got the idea from this chick 'gypsylemon' on ff.net...she's probably on here somewhere...and one of her stories. I mean, take the whole 'you think I'm such a vigin' mumbo jumbo. Well, obviously she had score with someone else, she didn't specify how, when, who, what, where, blah blah blah. So you take that with Yero finding some sort of scar on her family jewel, and the first thing that come to mind to him is his diamonds getting almost kinda 'ironed-on' her skin....come on, what the hell, that's bullsheet to me, but hey, this is what I think, so ya'll can have your own opinion, but back to the subject. You take Yero's thoughts and in my book I mark it as being a slim chance of that happening. Then you take to mind that she's somewhat modest. I can't quote the book cause I don't have it with me, so you'll just have to follow me here...but you notice how she, like, never, ever let Yero touch her beyond a certain point, and how she pulled the covers over herself to cover up her bareness right after Yeo finds the scar-like marking...so bascially, I think, with all those points above, that something such as a raping happening and that's why she won't to this or that or yadda yadda bullshit yadda. Hopefully you catch on what I'm saying and you get the basic picture. I was never too swift on explaining stuff. My head hurts. Theories are hard.

guys,...... my dad just deceided to read the book, and i'm kinda afraid to find out what he says to me when he reads this section Oh yeah... could get very interesting! I don't know how old you are, or how strict your dad is about sexual imagery in what you read or view, but I have known a few parents who went ballistic after the first 20 pages, finding out their kids were reading it! Even as a battle-scarred grown-up, I found myself a little shocked by some of what I read the first time I read it... and it's definitely not a kids book. I'd even go far enough to suggest that it's not a juvenile/young adult book either, EXCEPT that what goes on isn't any worse than most of what passes for film and TV drama these days anyway. Good luck! If your dad starts getting anxious about what you're reading, you'll really have to assure him that you know what you're doing and you can handle it. I had to do that many times! Fiyercrow

Fiyercrow this might be totally off topic, but i really do not think that the book is inappropriate for teens (i'm not arguing or disagreeing w/ u fiyercrow!). i'm 16 and this year i had to read Beloved for my ap class. in this book, there is a lot of refrence to sex and just a lot of people having sex (even within the first ten pages). even with cows! that is required reading for 11th grade. there was a similar book that i had to read last year as well as one for ap global, which involed sexual relations with sheep. if this is what we must read in school, i think that all parents should have no problem with their children reading wicked. this is not to say that 8 year olds should start reading it! just my opinion

Beloved's awesome! No, there's no argument here, I actually consider juvie/young adult to be 11 to 14, maybe 15 at the outside depending on the basic social comfort and exposure of the individual. By 16, if you're ready for To Kill A Mockingbird, Catcher In The Rye, or ANY Kurt Vonnegut, then Wicked is hardly going to be a big shocker for you. It's not for people who aren't equipped to deal with sexual arousal and imagery of (mildly, arguably) deviant sex, no matter what their age. In Wicked, some of the imagery is more overt and descriptive than in the aforementioned books, but the acts themselves aren't important... it's the nature of the acts and the intent of the participants (and how it all relates to making better choices and living in love rather than selfishness) that is of most import to the reader... And if the reader can grasp the lessons there at an earlier age (but not too early that they're unequipped to handle the basic concepts), so much the better. I'd rather have my children read Wicked or Brave New World, or any other book of that nature, than play half of the car-chase/crime video games out currently. The books teach something applicable to life, the games tend to just glorify the fantasy of deviant behavior. (Not trying to start a game-bashing thread, just making a parental viewpoint)...
