i love how Galinda is kinda put behind the eight ball, in the scense that her Ama was not there to help her meat the other girls, and how she was not the popular one we like to think of her as. I feel like we see her as a real person, and not just the haughity exterior she trys to put up for the rest of the world to see.... what do you think?

Agreed. I think it's safe to say that in general the book characters have a lot more substance than the show characters do. Boq is another prime example of this...not that I don't love the show. The book just has a lot more depth to it.

I also think that the book makes their frindship a little un defined......... I mean, in the play there is a deffinate begining to their friendship, the book makes it is little more confusing.... I donno, but I never saw a deffinate begning to their frindship..... maby im wrong.... but i donno.
And Also, they do spend a lot of time together...... but what do they do?!? I mean, especially in the begning of this section..... they hate eachother, so why do they spend all the time they do together?

I dunno, I always thought that like in te musical, the friendship actually begins in their room when Elphie tries on the hat. It's not actual 'best friend' kinda friendship like in the musical, but that's when they kinda first accept each other and I think that's when Galinda actually starts to think of Elphie as a person instead of just an annoyance.
I love the little jibes about Galinda's intelligence. Like: Galinda was slow to come to terms with actual learning. She had considered her admission to Shiz University as a sort of testimony to her brilliance, and believed that she would adorn the halls of learning with her beauty and occasional clever sayings. This reminds me soooo much of CHenoweth's Galinda. The whole This is Youthful Intelligence; admire Her. Isn't She lovely? is so musical Galinda! I also love how Galinda DOES actually have a lot of substance to her, though. I agree that she is definitely more substantial than musical Galinda. Like the 'appreciation of architecture was Galinda's private passion' line or, the line Kristin Chenoweth used in an interview (can't remember which one though but I really loved it!!) to convey to the musical fans that Galinda actually DID have brains and wasn't just the blonde bimbo. In the interview she mentioned that when she was reading the part about Galinda moving to the window to let the light shine on her hair ( 'Galinda was glad for the natural advantages of her flaxen hair, and stood by a window so the light could dazzle itself off her curls') she realized that Galinda wasn't actually an airhead. I can't remember where she said this but I'm pretty sure I didn't make it up!!

But I've read that interview too - so you didn't make it up! ;D

Just re read the section again.........
I wish they incorporated more of the book Galinda into the Musical Galinda. In the book she is still funny and rather amusing to watch, but at the same time is created in such a ay that she becomes a rounded charictor as opposed to the flat charictor she is portrayed as on stage..... now Im not saying that Kristin, laura, and jennifer dont do a great job...... its Just that I dont feel that the script allows for the expansion and growth that the chairtor of Galinda needs to show herself fully..... I almost feel as if the auddiance becomes one of the people that Galinda is putting this act upon, the I Am shallow and only care about me act/ apperiance....... even in the scene right before "For Good" When Elphie says something like, "You know, You have been the only friend I ever had" and then Glinda responds "and I have had so many friends....... but only one that really mattered" I just feel like the over all charictor of Galinda is very insecure and puts up a front to the rest of the world to make them think that she is all fun, games and laghs, and as an auddiance member we see what she wants us to see..... we kinda almost get a glimps of the REAL Galinda, but just as we begin to see it she closes up again.
In the book however, we just keep pulling back each layer of the Galinda rose...... you know, it is all preety an beautiful on the outside, but as u get closer to the middle, the peddles get smaller, and thicker, and lighter in coler ultil all u have left are te pollen sticks. she never has a chance to rebuild her walls, and we are also reading the storie from a third person, omnipotent narroration point of view, so we know everything that goes on in her head and y she does some of the things she does.............. im gonna stop rambling now...........
thanks for listning!

I agree with that too, you almost cant tell that their friendships that strong in the book because at times Elphaba is very sarcastic and you dont see their friendship having substance..whereas in the musical by the end when they have to part, you can see how deep their friendship was/is.

I don't know. There's something naughty in that imagery. I'll just go back to being 12... Um...ew. That was a little out of place. Anywho, I really like both of the Galindas (no matter how much substance or lack there of there may be). I think the book character is a lot more complex because she is actually a bit intelligent and that adds to the collasis of emotions she conveys. And Book Galinda actually cares about looking and being smart. As for Stage Galinda, she's fine with just being beautiful and ditzy. And on stage, that's what's so charming about her to the other Shiz students. In the book, she has to try a lot harder to make people like her (i.e. getting snubbed by the other girls). Yep, that's about all I have to say.

For those who've read through the book once (or, heck, even twice. Do I hear thrice? Anyone?), we know that Elphaba has a destiny that directly influences Oz, what with being fathered by the Wizard and her connections not only with Mother Yackle, but with Saint Aelphaeba.
Is Galinda also a pawn in the same way that Elphie seems to be? Madame Morrible has plans for all three girls (Elphie, Nessarose, and Galinda/Glinda) -- but was Galinda always part of that plan? Or does Morrible tag her on after she sees the relationship between Elphie and Galinda?

Four times! Or more, i like to read the second and third sections and the last few pages over and over.
Anyway to offer my opinion to the Lady Mule's post I think that both girls had a destiny, even if Galinda/Glinda thought she was significant because she was beautiful. But i don't think that Morrible picked up on Elphaba's potential first. I think she saw Galinda's determination and stubborness when it came to getting rid of her roommate and probably chose her as the first Adept. Picking Elphaba because of their relationship and Elphie's ties to the land and titles, and Nessarose to help keep Elphaba under control. hmmm interesting question though....

no matter how many times i read the book, going on 7 now u guys, there r still parts that i dont understand... and one of them is the part where the three girls become "chosen ones". I mean i kinda reminds me of the tv show charmed, in that there r three witches whose destinies have already been charted and they intertwine and stuff.... but after reading this section i always feel like Gregory Mcguire kinda started something that he wasen't prepared to follow through with...... I donno, maby im just dim....... some one, please explain!!!!!!
Thanks
