This was my first time seeing Wicked, and it is seriously the best show ever! Even better than I imagined. I really liked Stephanie Block, she was amazing! Even though her singing was a bit oddly paced at times. I just had to accept it as an interpretation, like, “Elphie talks… like this! When she’s… passionate!” Although the way she says “ah tum ah tum” during the spell is starting to grow on me. (It also makes me want to say, “Gesundheit!”) Katie Adams was Glinda instead of Kendra, but she was great too. She had too much fun being crazy ditzy teenage Galinda. I’m kinda torn over Carol Kane; I loved her acting, she just wasn’t as ‘Madame Morrible-y’ as a Madame Morrible should be. Jenna Green was crazy good as Nessa, and while I was a little iffy with Derrick Williams as Fiyero during “Dancing Through Life,” I liked him better as he got more serious. I just think his “I’m hot-stuff-Fiyero!” routine was weird (especially with those pants!). David Garrison was pretty fun as the Wizard, and I love his little dance with Elphaba during “Wonderful”. I think the only thing I didn’t like was Logan Lipton’s super dorky interpretation of Boq. Atleast give the boy a little dignity.
Quick generic play impressions:
Unfortunately I couldn’t see the Time Dragon very well from where I was sitting (the balcony blocked it). Dr. Dillamond’s make-up didn’t freak me out as much as it did in the pictures I’ve seen, which was good; Elphaba’s dress in Act 2 is the most amazing dress ever, it should have been my prom dress. And Elphie and Glinda’s fight wasn’t as great as I thought it’d be. There’s only so much you can do in those dresses, I suppose.
And the audience was great, too (Is this technically reviewing myself?). They got all excited at Elphie’s first appearance and were humored/shocked/etc at every appropriate moment. All of the direct Wizard of Oz reference lines were a big hit (except with me because… I rarely react to anything while watching plays. I don’t know why.). And I’ve officially made my mom a Wicked fan, so hopefully she won’t accidentally call Elphaba ‘Adelphia’ anymore. (I’m like, “Mom, that’s a cable company.”)
