" I think it is confirmed he wasn't the Scarecrow. I distinctly remember a passage in which Elphaba looked in her telescope and saw the Scarecrow with all his straw out to protect Dorthy and her friends from bees. There was just a piece of burlap left of him, which of course could be restuffed. Let me try to find a quote...
Her thoughts that the scarecrow could be Yero (page 389, musical edition): "But she had no way to place the scarecrow. She began to think that behind that painted cornmeal sack of a face, ther was a face she woudl know, a face she had been waiting for."
Her realization it wasn't him: "Liir gave a blow by b low recounting. "They're swooping down, they lok like a genie or something, all flying in a big clump with a straggly tail. The travelers see them coming. Yes! Yes! The scare crow is taking strawe out of his chest and leggings, and covering the Lion and Dorothy, and there's a little dog, too. So the bees can't get through the staw, and the Scarecrow is all in pieces on teh ground." It couldn't be. The Witch grabbed the eyepiece. "Liir, you are a filthy liar," she shouted. He heart roared like the wind. But it was true. There was nothing but straw and air inside the scarecrow's clothes. No hidden lover returning, no las hope of salvation." Yes there is a post in there, but it has like a lot of spoilers.
