I'm probably going to major (or concentrate, rather, as it's Brown) in English, and I'm a big reader who likes finding meaning and connections and all, but I definitely don't understand the function of the character Yackle in the book. Is she a catalyst for changes in Elphaba's life? The proverbial fairy godmother-type? Elphaba's soul/conscience? Fanfiction writers seem to disagree, so I figured I would go to the experts.

If I remember right, Maguire himself didn't know Yackle's purpose. She has no symbolism. She was always just there. Fanfiction writers create their own symbolism and purpose for her for the sake of their stories.
Of course, I could be making this up, but I'm pretty sure I remember an interview in which Maguire said that she doesn't have any symbolism, she was just a random thing that kept popping up.

That's...weird. It makes sense, I guess, and probably explains a lot of my confusion about parts of the book in general. Thing is, it felt like a lot of Maguire's descriptions, dialogue, and plot devices were all layered with symbolism that I didn't get. If he means for things to just 'be there,' he does an awfully good job of writing them with hints of a greater purpose.
Thanks, anyway.

Well for the most part, it is symbolism... but I'm pretty sure Yackle is an exception.

I haven't finished the book yet... but I thought Yackle was some fortune teller who was predicting Elphie's future or something. Lol... I guess I'm way off!! i know this is the kind of book I'll have to read over and over to get all the meanings out of it too...

It really is. I just finished reading it for the fifth time (FIVE!!! Sad, I know...), and I'm still figuring things out that I never noticed before.

Think there'll be more of Yackle in the sequel?

I bet, seeing as she sort of ambiguously guided Elphaba through life...

In the sequel it sort of suggests that Yackle is Elphie's... guardian demon? Almost like the opposite of a gaurdian angel, I guess. And considering the dwarf guy was a guardian of the grimmerie... hmm. It's still confusing...
