I personally am awiating Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty. It just recently won the Booker Prize award and has been in print in Britaint where it garnered its acclaim. It will be released here in ( i think) 5 days (Oct 28). The B&N by my school is going to call my cell when they get it in, and sinc eit will be a Thursday, and I can go out to lunch, I'll spend my lunch break a subway stop away at the B&N. What a way to recoup from the pre-calc test i have that morning. this had really better be some intense work of tragic brilliance luminous beauty and epic enchantment. at least, i hope it will be...
in the mean time, to all u da vinci coders, i recommend the rule of four. the sma thrills but with better writing and a more plausible plot. i have always followed teh apocryphal gospels, personally, and so the whole married jesus/ da vinci art/ priory thing wasnt news to me, wasnt shocking. it was just some cheap ride.
altho
i do await the illustrated edition which will be out nov 2. it will be fun to contrast the art and architecture referenced in the novel with their actual images.
i'd also suggest reading plays, a surprisingly fulfilling activity. angels in america is intense and brilliant, and is five bajillion times better as a play than it was as a movie, and all can agree it was a phenomonal movie.
o, and for light hearted witty farcical fun, i suggest How I Paid for college. the most fun ive had reading a book since i picked up wicked. hehe. its by marc acito.
o, and wild animus by rich shapero. it was a very interesting novel, and it was a glorious premise. it could have been better, but teh sheer potential of it merits a reading.
and lastly, just for kicks, may i suggest a classic trilogy of dark romance and seductive horror. the first three of anne rice's vampire chronicles, interview with teh vampire... vampire lestat... queen of teh damned. i wrote an american history paper on the first one, as it was seminal in american literature and radical in its uninhibited tho veiled presentation of sexual liberty. it is a beautiful book, and its first two follow ups are fitting continuations. after those, the only other rice books im fond of are vampire armand, vittorio, and blood and gold.
her son is also a great author, christopher.
well that makes everything id immediately suggest. my bookshelf is littered with eclectic choices, but these are definitely the best examples of my personal, varied fiction tatse.
hope it helps, and sry about bad spelling and or grammar.
;D
