Anyone know if there's a cast recording? I know it was off-Broadway and I can't find it on amazon or towerrecords, but I figure if there IS a cast recording, someone here will know

It wasn't off-Broadway, it was in Conneticut or something like that. And I'm 99.9% positive there's no recording. A shame, that...

On the brink of World War II, a young kid (Hermie) and his family go to spend the summer on this Island. He is coming towards the age when he is interested in girls. His friends are excited about kissing a girl and they basically spend the whole summer planning it.
Somewhere else on the Island a woman named Dorothy is seeing her husband off as he leaves for his patriotic duty. (His name is Pete). He leaves and she wonders how she will spend the time with out him (which is her first song...) She is upset that he is gone, but tries to be optimisstic and writes him letters often.
She is at the market and Hermie sees her. Immediately, he has a little crush on Dorothy. His friends make fun of his shyness and dare him to talk to her. So, to prove them wrong he says hi to her. They talk for a moment and he offers to help her take her groceries home. She agrees. Hermie walks Dorothy home. She likes him too. They talk about how Dorothy met Pete. They sing another song. "Someone to Dance with me" Hermie is enamered with the older woman. She asks him if he could come back another time to help her with some boxes.
Then the three boys are hanging out and they meet three young girls. Each boy has a new partner. They ask if they want to go to the movies sometime. They agree on a place and time.
The boys are excited and want to know how to make out with girls. So they talk about and tease each other as to who can go "all the way" and touch the girls "Breasts". They go to the movies and each boy sits next to they girl and each tries his best to get as far as he can. The girl that Hermie is with really likes him. When he thinks that he had gained the courage to reach out and touch...he doesn't look and grabs her elbow and is so excited that he actually grabbed her!
Then, Dorothy is getting worried about Pete, since he hadn't written in while. Hermie comes over to help with the boxes and they talk again. This time he has more confidence. She gives him some coffee, (he is trying to be an adult).
They boys have more fun with the girls over the summer and it is almost over. Then Dorothy gets a letter that Pete has been killed in action. She is home drinking, crying, and grieving. Hermie comes over to tell her Good-bye since the family was leaving the next morning. He sees her in pain and holds her to comfort her. She ends up sleeping with him and he leaves in the morning with a note from Dorothy explaining her feelings about what happened. Hermie leaves the island. Years later he comes back as as old man. He sees the ghost of Dorothy as he left her on the poarch, smoking a cigarette in her robe, crying. He realizes that he became a man that summer.
Idina was brillant. Of course she had to be. Her three songs were really well written. If they were taken out, it would be too sad. She was a perfect 1940's young married woman. She had the look and the feel of the part down to a "T".
I was impressed. I was fortunate enough to wait in the theatre with the parents of Ryan, the actor who played Hermie. Idina came out and we had a nice chat. She was very sweet. I was saddened that they never made a cast recording with her as dorothy. Although, the show was a little small for Broadway. The cast was small, and the plot wasn't enough to keep it running for an extended period of time.
thanks K. Heather!

Yeah. It's just a shame there's nothing out there fo it. There is a bio page, 2 pictures, and 2 sound clips, and that's it. Other then that we have nothing.

In case anyone's interested, Summer of '42, the movie, is on Bravo at 5am (cst) sunday morning the 21st. It apparently has the same plotline as the musical.
"Silent as a painting, the movie shows us day-dreamer Hermie and his friends Oscy and Benjie spending the summer of '42 on an US island with their parents - rather unaffected by WWII. While Oscy's main worries are the when and how of getting laid, Hermie honestly falls in love with the older Dorothy, who's married to an army pilot. When her husband returns to the front, Hermie shyly approaches her."

Think of all the Sarah Brightman concerts you're missing? And how would you watch Queer Eye For The Straight Guy? Only an hour and ten minutes till movie! YAY! taping it though, don't think I can stay awake even though it got 3 1/2 stars.

And sometimes NBC plays it... I wish I could see Summer of '42 now.
