Does anyone else find it hard to watch The Wizard of Oz? It was/is my all-time favorite movie, but it annoys me that they make Elphaba seem so mean.

LLAM...that is soooo funny that you would say that, because last night I was watching a bunch of musicals with my friend (yes, we are dorks and she was like "How 'bout the Wizard of Oz?" and I just couldn't handle it...I was like "this is such propaganda!" and, yes, i know its not real, but I just can't watch it any more.

You know what's funny? I never liked the "Wizard of Oz." I don't know, it just was never really interesting to me. But I read "Wicked" because it intrigued me. And then they made the musical. And I was hooked. But I haven't seen WoO since I was 15.
The most ironic thing though? I was deathly afraid of "The Wicked Witch of the West." Everytime I saw the movie I would always run away with my hands over my eyes (Real smart, huh?) But now? She's one of my favorite characters that I've ever read/seen. Now I REALLY can't watch the WoO. Because Elphie is so not mean. And she didn't deserve to be killed. *SPOILER* Even though, ya know, it was all a set-up and she really didn't die. It's so funny because when someone makes jokes about her dying, I just laugh, shake my head and say "You have no idea." Yep. My point? Never liked the WoO. Probably won't watch it anytime soon. And if I did? It'd be really strange.

WoO is also my favorite movie, and while i don't find it hard to watch it is sooo different, here's what i wrote after seeing the movie for the first time since wicked:
so, its friday night and i have absoultly nothing to do (i know so boring!)so anyway i was thinking about (what else) wicked and what i really want to do is go see the show, but thats not happing on such short notice, so the next bext thing is watching the wizard of oz. so thats exactataly what im doing. and after seeing wicked twice, i cant watch the wizard of oz the same way. for example glinda is now coming onto the screen and i can jsut hear kristin say "its good to see me, isn't it?" and when the house dropped i thought about kristins line about a "regime change" and now their showing "all thats left of the wicked witch of the east" and can you guess my reaction, "oh-poor nessa!" seriously that musical has changed [my perspective on the move]for good. and as my mom remarked a few weeks, isn't no one morns the wicked a much more appealing song than ding dong the witch is dead? and now through the whole munchin scene all i can think aobut is but nessa wasn't really like that! the "wicked" witch of the west just entered and my reaction was "elphie!" and glinda is so mean to her and it broke my heart, i was like, but shes your best friend! you know, i really like idinas elphaba better than margret hamiltions wicked witch. and do realize that even in the movie, glinda is not really good. imean she tells the witch to go get the ruby slippers and then takes them away. ok, im going to stop typing now, and jsut watch the movie. oh, one more thing. now glinda just told dorothy to follow the yellow brick road, and i cna just hear kirstin going"bye, bye, yes thats right just take that one road the whole way. oh do do hope shes alright, im just terrible at giving directions."
so yeah, much harder to watch the movie, "its looking at things in another way"

The Wizard of Oz is my fav movie of all time(I'm sure you all picked up on that! LLAM) I LOVE Margerat Hamilton as the Wicked Witch. I actually do prefer the movie over Wicked.

I still love WoO even after seeing Wicked. I think it's the whole Oz thing. It seems like a neat place to visit (based on L. F. Baum's version not GM's). I looked at the witches differently after seeing Wicked, but I can't change my mind about how I feel about the movie b/c I've seen it so many times.

My friend and I were actually just talking about that the other day. Elphie (as she's known in here) and I decided that we'd probably never be able to watch Wizard of Oz again! Wicked puts such a different and awesome spin on the whole story that the old one just doesn't seem complete anymore somehow.

WOW..it is soo hard to watch WOO now...i feel so bad for elphie...she was like forced to be wicked..and glinda is really the evilish one.. ive always wondered why the wicked witch wanted the ruby slippers so badly..i thought she was just being wicked [llam]..now i feel like dorothy/glinda were the wicked ones for not just giving elphie back her only memory of her sister!! and its soo weird to know that :spoiler: the wizard is really elphies father it like changes so much for me

And if I did? It'd be really strange. Yeah, I always liked it, but probably had only seen it like 3 or 4 times before seeing Wicked. And the Wicked Witch used to absolutely TERRIFY me. (One time I went with my Dad to the wax museum when I was, like, 6, and they had this really scary wax figure of her holding her broom and cackling and I freaked out and started bawling, and we had to leave). Soooo, my point is that its really ironic that I like Elphaba so much, but Wicked really made me "look at things a different way." And now I am not scared of her anymore (that may be because I am 19, but I attribute some of it to Wicked). Moral of my rambling story: Wizard of Oz - great, Wicked - great made greater.

I haven't tried to watch it yet... and ElphaZack, you confused me -- first it was still your favorite, next you said to never watch it again...

Ah, I understand now.
Oh yeah, guys! We can't complain about how awful Wizard of Oz is because without Wizard of Oz, there would be no Wicked.
