Anyone else watching Olympics? The tv's turned to CBC in my house 24-7 during this time. I loved the parade yesterday, even if it was super long and sometimes boring. But it was so kewl to see the vastly different countries in all manner of dress. And the show was pretty neat too- the water element was kewl, as well as that whole history of Greek art thing and the olive tree coming down and the runner running through all the past Olympics. Canadians are very rarely outwardly patriotic. But for two weeks every two years, we go canuck crazy. It's Olympic time!! Yay Olympics! Usually this is a time when canucks decide that we loathe Americans, but ever since I went to New York I have been less anti-American than I used to be Plus I know so many nice Yanks now it's hard not to root for America. Sooooo, this year I'm kind of cheering for America as well as Canada and Australia. Silently cheering, mind you, but cheering.

The Olympics ruin my regular television watching. Enough Said.
lol! Although I'm more into the Winter Olympics because of the hockey, which is the only sport Canadians can get all patriotic about. I'll watch some gymnastics if it's on and sometimes the medal rounds, not the silly qualifying ones.

The summer Olympics actually kind of bore me. Now the Winter Olympics are a different story. I love the ice skating and the hockey and everything. I loved the most recent one- in the good ol' U.S of A! He he. They were great. And Sarah represented Long Island! But I digress.... I'll watch the Olympics. As long as it doesn't interfer with me getting my Law & Order fix (::cough:: Jesse L. Martin ::cough: . LLAM.

But it was so kewl to see the vastly different countries in all manner of dress. Did it bother anybody else that as all the people from different countries came in, Bob Costas (the commentator on NBC) would make little jokes about them. Like the people from Malta - instead of actually saying anything about Malta, he was like "where's the maltese falcon? we should look in Malta...hahaha" He said a couple of other semi-rude things about countries and it just started to make me mad. But, I looooved the walking in and I loved to see all the people from different countries. It was so cool and I learned a whole bunch.... ;D

No NBA fans hate me here... but I was kinda happy to see the basketball team get whipped by Puerto Rico today. NBA players think they're so amazing that they don't even have to play... just be handed the gold medal. Riiiight. These guys should wake up- they aren't the '92 dream team by a long shot.
The interview with the team captain afterwards made me laugh: Interviewer: "You said the loss to Italy was a wake up call... what do you call today's loss?" Captain: (after some hemming and hawing) "Another wake up call."
Ahhh. Schadenfreude. ;D

it makes the world a better place to be.
i'm with you, wickedOlivia. the Hockey is by far the best part of the olympics. Especially since the Canadian olympic hocky teams kick ass. But i was v. impressed with the synchronized diving. anyone else see that?

Synchronized diving is verry kewl. My family kept making fun of me cuz they think it's lame (anything that isn't baseball, hockey, soccer, or football is lame in my house) but I was like 'yeah, and can any of you do that?' Imagine the work those guys have to go through to do synchronized diving? I mean, diving's hard enough, but SYNCHRONIZED?!?! Yay Kay for pointing out about the NBA basketball! I also think it's great that other countries are giving the US team a run for their money. Isn't it weird that the baseball teams are all made up of amateurs but the basketball is all NBA pros? Like, who decides those parameters? Why isn't it ALL amateurs? That's why it's so funny that a team of Puerto Ricans can beat the NBA pros Ouch your opening night commentator sounds kinda rude. But I think all the stations are biased. Ours were really great- announcing all the countries and who their strongest competitors were- until Canada came out. After that, they didn't show us any more countries in the parade. It was just 'oh, let's talk to come of the Canadian atheletes on cell phones and ask them how they're feeling right now!!' Gee pal, how do you THINK they're feeling? They were asking the stupidest questions and the worst part was that the atheletes couldn't hear them anyways cuz they're in the middle of a HUGE CROWD OF PEOPLE!! So then the commentators were shouting ridiculous questions like five or six times!

Other countries don't have titles like "professionals" or "amateurs." So you can't really have certain limits and such. Also, you can't have professional baseball players on the the U.S baseball team (unless they're retired). Why? Well, it's baseball season. And all the professionals are playing for something else: a playoff spot.
I get very nationalistic during the Olympics. So, regardless of attitudes, I'll root for the U.S teams no matter what. So I was very angry when our Basketball team lost.

As for baseball, yeah since it's the middle of the season the REAL pros can't come out but even the third alternate who sits on the bench all year is considered 'professional'. Plus, it's not just the MLB that carries the 'pro' ranking. The Japanese team is made completely of professionals from their two leagues. And the Cuban team is mostly, if not all, pros too. But the Canucks just seem to have the career minor leaguers and the guys who get called up and then sent down really fast again. Yet we're still 3-0!!!! YYYYYAAAAAYYYYY! The baseball is the only thing that's keeping me watching these days. Cuz the Canucks suck at everything else. Hopefully when diving and rowing finals start we'll be a little less embarrassing. Canucks play the US in softball tomorrow. I'm afraid. Very afraid.
