I like the clip. It's good for a movie version. Obviously they weren't trained for opera and their singing reflects that. It's just regular singing, which is not bad. If you go to the official show site www.thephantomoftheopera.com there's a message board with a discussion of it. Someone even made a comparison thing for Sarah Brightman and Emmy Rossum. It's pretty cool.

It's pretty cool. Actually, Emmy Rossum started singing at the Met when she was like, 7 (I think...) but she's definitely trained to sing opera. It's Gerard Butler (who plays the Phantom) who wasn't originally trained for opera--he used to sing in a rock band, and they trained him for this part specifically. If you're a member of phantomfans.net, they have the entire album available for download, and if you listen to the rest of the soundtrack, as opposed to that little clip, you can get a better feel for their voices. ~Amanda

I never knew that Emmy was trained for opera. I just based my opinion on people I've heard sing opera (like Sarah Brightman and people who have starred in POTO on stage). She's still young, so that caliber (I think that's the word I want) of opera hasn't fully developed. Thanks for the info!

Soooooooooo can't wait to see this.
In my mind, with the advent of movies like PotO, Rent and the Producers being made, I htink we're ushering in the new era of movie musicals.
Really the only thing that scares me is Minnie Driver as Carlotta.

Really the only thing that scares me is Minnie Driver as Carlotta. That shouldn't be too scary, I hope. I'm only worried about her acting. Her singing is dubbed by someone who has performed Carlotta on the stage. I've heard a clip of that and it's not too bad.

There's a clip of the movie on the official website now. You have to play a little game to see it though...On a few pages, there will be a little envelope that you need to click on. They're all notes from the phantom! (how fun! ;D) Once you find all four of them, a scene from the movie starts. Just a hint...most of the envelopes are found in the links on the right side of the window. If that didn't make sense--find them yourself!!!! lol. But really, head over and find them, it's a great clip. Ooh, and the other thing. The Japanese trailer is online, too: www.opera-movie.jp/Have phun! (Hehe, I love phandom....) ~Amanda

A little OT, but when is Hugh going on vacation? Just curious. I'm gonna go see Phantom on Tuesday, and I love Hugh as the Phantom. The movie is so good! Minnie Driver does a great job acting like a diva, and I think the movie is pretty close to the stage production. It's definately a movie style, but it adheres to the staging and such of the show. The only thing I didn't like was the Phantom's Masquerade outfit and his "disguise" in Don Juan. There was no hiding who he was. I liked it, and the music was going through my head the rest of the day.
