Was wondering if anyone was familiar with any interesting one-act/ten-minute dramas for a student-directed high school production. Our school's theater program is very intuitive and professional (just to brag), so many mature themes are accepted. I am looking for some powerful and different pieces, and would appreciate any reccomendations! Thanks!

Try "Shel's Sister". It's a drama about two sisters. The older one, Shel, is pretty and popular and perfect, while the younger one, Elisabeth, is secluded and average. One day after her sister leaves the room, Elisabeth tries on Shel's prom dress and the zipper gets stuck. Afraid to be caught wearing Shel's dress, she tries to loosen it.She gets so frustrated that she starts burning Shel's awards and college acceptance letters. Elisabeth finally tries lighter fluid to loosen the zipper. It doesn't work and she hears Shel coming closer. She douses herself with lighter fluid. You see Elisabeth light a match and then the lights blackout.
It's really good/sad!! I might have a copy of the script but I'm not sure. You could probably find a copy, though.

"Frankenstein Lives" isn't all bad either! My school just did that. You could also try "Sleepy Hollow" or any Shakespeare selection. Or maybe a bit of "Huis Clos [No Exit]"?

"The Last Five Years" ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! You need to have a good cast, but if you get two good singers, you're okay, because it has two characters! The OCR off Broadway was Norbert Leo Butz and Sheirie Rene Scott. It's incredible, and I know a link to the scrip too. Pretty sure the rights are avalible. It's a one act.

well, if your looking for a musical you could also do "Once on this island", it is a sung through... the ensamble is also really prevelent...... it is preety much the carribian adaptation of the origional little mermaid. If your looking for a drama then "Proof" is really good... it is about a girl whos father was a mathmatician and e receiently died... and about all the work e id..... it is really interesting. good luck, and have fun!!

"Once on This Island" is particularly good. It's really not much like the Little Mermaid, although I know that's how it's advertised. My school did it a few years back...the music's pretty good, I think. L5Y also kicks most musicals' asses, "ditto tick, tick...BOOM!" If you're looking for something a bit more different or experimental, check out Langston Hughes' "12 Moods for Jazz" and "Ask Your Mama". They comprise a series of poems meant to be performed with musical accompaniment (but not actually songs). Kind of like "Over the Moon" from "Rent," only not. Check the pieces out-- I particularly like "Cultural Exchange"
