while watching the trailer for the producers I got to thinking about DRS and I realized that (unfortunately) it'll probably never be a movie because even though its good it doesn't have a huge fanbase like Rent or The Producers...too bad really, I'd love to see a movie of DRS...anyways, I got to thinking about what will happen to the shows that are popular right now. I mean, will they last much longer on broadway, will the get the movie treatment, in 20 years will they become favourite choices of High Schools much like Bye Bye Birdie, Grease and The Sound of Music? I just thought it was an intersting idea.

Well, DRS did start out as a movie, and a good one at that, if not a musical with Norbert involved...That one specifically I think will have trouble down the road-- the pop culture references are way too current, and it's raunchy/immoral enough that a lot of high schools will just censor it, you know?

I definately see lots of musicals becoming movies. I actually think we're coming back into another "Golden Age" of movie musicals. I mean, look how successful things like Chicago and Moulin Rouge. I'm holding out for a movie version of "A Chorus Line." I think it would be sooooo awesome!

I think there already is a movie version of Chorus Line, but even if there isn't...it's a great show, but the whole thing takes place in front of a mirror. It wouldn't be the easier thing to transfer, you know?
I do hope, however that the Producers, Hairspray, Dreamgirls, and especially Rent inspire studios to not only make more movie musicals, but to incorporate as much of the original/replacement casts as possible.

There is a movie of A Chorus Line, I haven't seen the show (I can't wait to see it next year!) but I wasn't impressed by the movie at all.
I agree with stars in the sky about the rent and harispray inspiring producers and people. I would LOVE to see a movie version of spelling bee. It would probably stink but it would just be really interesting to see what it looks like. The Producers was a movie in the sixites, correct me if I'm wrong, but there is already a movie of that and they're making a new one, the trailer can now be viewed. But I would love to see DRS as a musical movie, especially if it has Norbert in it.

The thing with something like Spelling Bee (or A Chorus Line, etc.) is that the show and all of its components are really geared around being in a live theater. Spelling Bee without the audience-inspired pandemonium? Not to mention the flashbacks and segues...hm. I'd still go see it if they did a movie, though, mind you. Heck, I'm going to see the Producers and I didn't even like the show that much.

Heck, I'm going to see the Producers and I didn't even like the show that much. Same with me...I'm just glad to see movie-musicals again.
