Hi all! I just wanted to come on and inform you that I have once again made the Power of the Pen team at my school. It is a competition in which 7 students from 7th and 8th grade from each school are chosen, after writing an essay or story, and move on to a state-wide competition of writing. Districts is the first competition, which is where you only write in your town's district. If you place in the top 25% (each piece we write at the competitions are graded), you move onto the Regional Competition, which is then all the people who moved on from your "region". I placed 1st last year at this competition and I thought my coach was gonna have a heart attack, lol. Next there is the State Competition, which is the best of the best. I went there last year, but didn't place high enough to go into the final round called "The Power Round" in which the top 54 writers write for a final time and go for the prize. Our school has never gotten anyone to the Power Round, but we're hoping to change that this year. Wish me luck everyone! I'll keep you posted as competitions come and pass!

That sounds like fun! What kinds of things do you write at the competitions?

We get a prompt and have 40 minutes to write a story about it. We are not told ahead of time what the prompt is, hence, the competition of thinking of an idea in 40 minutes and making your writing meaningful.
