It's almost time for the Tonys! I'm very excited,a dn I just wanted to know if people had predictions or favorites or anything.
I'm personally pulling for The Drowsy Chaperone over Jersey Boys. In my mind, Sutton Foster can do absolutely no wrong. The first year I really got into the Tonys was the year that Thoroughly Modern Millie won everything, so I remember just being floored by her performance of "Forget About the Boy." So, I obviously want her to win best actress in a musical. Kelli O'Hara is my second choice, but I think Patti LuPone will probably win. I've never heard anyone criticize her perforamce in Sweeney Todd at all.
As far as plays go, I love Awake and Sing!. It's such a good play and probably my overall favorite of the year. However, I do really like History Boys, so I hope that wins a lot too.

Every source I've read says that The Drowsy Chaperone will win Best Musical, so that's probobly a good sign.

I think the Drowsy Chaperone will win. While I am rooting for The Wedding Singer since, of the nominees, I have seen that, I know it doesn't stand a chance. Sweeney Todd will definitely win Best Revival.

Sweeney was the only new show this season I saw, so I'm pulling for it up and down, particularly the orchestrations, Manoel Felciano for Best Featured Actor, and of course Best Revival. But I'm hoping Kelli wins Best Actress-- she was so incredible last year in Light in the Piazza, and of all the ladies nominated for that award, she and LaChanze are the only ones who haven't previously won, I believe. So yeah. Same thing for the Best Actor category-- Michael Cerveris (as with Patti) was absolutely astounding, but John Lloyd Young went to Brown! I do hope the Drowsy Chaperone cleans up, though-- that and the Pajama Game are the only new musicals this season that I really still want to see (as well as Spamalot still)...

I'm actually pulling for Pajama Game over Sweeney Todd for Best Revival. I know that Sweeney Todd is so dramatic and challenging for the actors and they were great, but I still love Pajama Game. (Plus Harry Connick Jr. and Kelli O'Hara work great together)
Also, I forgot to mention The Lieutenant of Inishmore looks really good. I don't know if it will win anything, because the competition is pretty stiff, but I'm still rooting for it.

Excerpt from my LJ post on the subject:
Did you see Patti LuPone (nominee for Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd) dancing at the opening number thing? Hehe. Also, I love that Sara Ramirez (who won last year for the Lady in the Lake in Spamalot and now plays Callie on Grey's Anatomy) and T.R. Knight (former Broadway actor who plays George) presented together, because Grey's Anatomy is sp much love, and they could be my favorite ship on that show. And Kate Burton's on it (nominated for the Constant Wife, plays Ellis Grey on Grey's Anatomy), too...but I'm glad Cynthia Nixon (Rabbit Hole) won, because she's always been great on Sex & the City (as Miranda), etc...I am very annoyed that the Jersey Boys guy (Christian Hoff) beat Mano (Manoel Felciano, who was nominated for Tobias in Sweeney Todd). While I'm dying to see the Pajama Game (though it's closing next weekend, so I shan't...*sigh*), Sweeney Todd way deserved best revival. But at least it won for orchestrations and direction. I was sort of rooting for Sweeney across the board by default, but if they give it (the best actress and actor in a musical) to Kelli (O'Hara, for the Pajama Game, and I saw her last year in the Light in the Piazza) and John Lloyd Young (for Jersey Boys; he's a brown grad!) instead of Michael (Cerveris, as Sweeney Todd) and/or Patti, that's cool with me.
And now the commercials are over...
Oooookay, I can't decide what i think of LaChanze winning (best actress in a musical for Celie in the Color Purple; sidenote to NA people-- she was the original TiMoune in Once on This Island way back in the day). I really wanted Kelli or Patti, and LaChanze's name just doesn't end in an 'i,' but it's happy. She's never won before. (And she did the cute shout-out to her daughters at home the way Norbert Leo Butz did last season!) And John Lloyd Young won! Brown grad! Wheeeeee! And now...best musical...and Julie Andrews <3
Also, what was with that Hal Prince tribute? All the little random people crouched along the stage (in costumes from various shows he directed), two seconds of (the) Phantom (singing, to honor its distinction as longest-running show ever this year), and that's it?
All in all, I was way more excited last year, but this still makes me happy. Because it's the Tonys. And Norbert and Vicki Clark totally appeared, and John Tartaglia. Plus Sara Ramirez and T.R. Knight with their cute thing, so I daresay I'll survive.

So, Im already thinking toward next year, but picture the showdown for best revival of a musical: Les Miz vs. A Chorus Line! Yikes!
