As you all probably know, a shortened (30 mins) and translated version of Wicked is at Universal Studios in Japan. This theme park show is almost entirely in Japanese with certain songs, in a very different order. I think the show works overall. Tell me what you think. Woah. Thats....interesting. I think Elphaba was American/spoke fluent English, cause her English portions were alot easier to understand than Glinda's. And no Fiyero! That made me sad.  |

Very interesting. I like how it was done for a short show. I only wish I knew Japanese to see how well it's translated. It's interesting that they use some English lines. Do they have captioning for those who don't know English? I thought it was strange to see a Japanese woman with blonde hair (Glinda) but she was good. The woman playing Elphaba is great! I think it would be cool if she did it on Broadway. Her English was very good and I wouldn't be surprised if she is American or has lived in America since she did have an American accent. I loved Glinda's accent, though.
This shows that it's possible to do a shortened version of the show. It would be neat if the American Universal Studios did the show as well, but that might be a bad thing considering how many American productions are out there. Thanks for pointing this out to us! I wasn't aware of a Universal Studios in Japan, let alone a production of Wicked.

Yeah, Elphaba's American, besides the fact that she looks it, her Japanese has an American accent. Unfortunately I can only understand very little, but it works well enough with scenes between songs explaining things. It anyone wants specifics... When the Wizard talks to the audience, he kind of does some introduction about the magic of Oz (maybe the story of Oz in general?), saying how Glinda will be the good witch and Elphaba the wicked one. After he greets Elphaba and asks who Glinda is, Glinda runs out and says she's "Elphaba no shiyu" meaning "Elphaba's best friend." And then Elphaba confesses she didn't like Glinda (or, wasn't happy?) the first time they met at Shiz-daigaku, but I don't know why Glinda seems so surprised (when she grabs Elphie's hat she says, "You weren't happy??") After "the Wizard and I" Elphie asks Glinda if she'll go to the Emerald city with her, but I still can't understand what Elphie's reason is, and suddenly they're friends. The rest is self-explanitory.

Whoa... that was really weird. It's well done, considering how short they made it... I was definitely confused though when they went from Defying Gravity to For Good... and the Japanese/English mixture gets confusing as well...

Oh, yeah, the Defying Gravity/For Good transition was weird, too... It sounds like they use the "You're the only friend I've ever had" and "I've had so many friends, but you're the only one who mattered" lines before For Good. Yeah, okay, I'm a little obsessed with this version now. That would be my dream, to be American Japanese Elphaba.
