I wasn't sure exactly where to put this, so i'm putting it here and the Boz can move it as they choose.
There has been much rumor and speculation about a Wicked movie and I started thinking of all the things you could do in a movie that cannot be done in a theater, and all the things in the book that didn't make it into the play. And how i would make it, if i was the director.
So i'm wondering what all my fellow Verdigrisians think. Should a wicked movie be book or play or a mix of both? should it even be made at all?
What would you like to see them put in? change? get rid of completly?
Should it be narrated? by whome? and the ten million dollar question, book Fiyero or play Fiyero?

Kewl topic! And this is just the right place for it (least I think it is... oh great now watch the other sistas come and gang up on me and move it because Mon is stewpid  ) I think the last I heard on this was that the book was under discussion to be a made-for-tv-movie and the musical a real movie. Which really would be awesome cuz then we'd get to see both without them being blended at all. But if they did only make one movie, and it HAD to be a mix of musical and book, I hope it's play Fiyero. And major play El-Ga friendship. Cuz there's not an incredible amount of El-Ga outright friendlyness in the book like there is in the play. But more of the book's political stuff and religious stuff and attention to the forgiveness theme of the book would be great to see. But hey I'd support any Wicked-related project that made it to big or small screen, no matter how it ended up looking! |

wow, i think a movie would be great! i would like for it to be based on the musical, but have the ending of the book. Though it's tragic Elphie dies, it would give it a powerful finish and a little more relevance to the "Wizard of Oz" for people who do not have verdigris like us. wow, finally my non-broadway going friends will know what i've been freaking out over for the last year or so!

I'd shoot for the musical version onscreen, and since they'd have to extend it for film, they can fill in gaps with details from the book-- like Elphie's childhood, more details from Shiz, or directly re-making scenes from the original WoZ book and/or movie.
And they should not have Chris Columbus direct it. He's got me so worried about Rent...and they should definitely get the original cast, or as much of it as possible back. Maybe the Chicago guys could take over the project?

I don't know; for me the spectacle of the play may be disenchanting in a movie - for example, Defying Gravity. I don't think it'd have the same appeal to me in a movie because it's not as stunning as it is when it's only a hundred feet or so in front of you.
If I could have it, I'd have a movie based on the book. I love the play, but I think it would hold a little more water with the WoO purists, and there's more in-depth plotline to discuss, such as the racial issues against Fiyero and the Jewishesque treatment of Animals, along with the religious overtones.
And I don't think it'd need a narrator; just start as the book starts and weave the story that way - from unloved child to spurned woman. If it would make a good, enjoyable movie, it should be able to tell itself.
If it were to be made a movie and it was book-based, however, I definately feel that, to keep even an R rating, it'd have to keep out the Philosophy Club, as much as I love it. I think it'd be too obscene for some very conservative people.
Meh, that's my two cents. I think I covered all of Fae's questions. ^_^ I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but that's just the way I feel.

I think the book would make a very interesting movie, but, marketing-wise, making a fantasy movie that's rated R might be a risk-- especially because so much of the book's popularity stems from the musical. *shrugs*
Personally, I've read the book twice and seen the show once, and the book still seems murky in places while the show nicely connects just about everything. It'd definitely be easier to convert into movie form than the novel, at the least.

I say go for the movie based on the play. Why fix something that isn't broken? I mean, think about it. The broadway show is such a huge hit with everyone. Why not put it on film, then everyone gets to hear and see it?

Ugh! Well, on the other hand, they did say that about Justin Timberlake in Rent, but fortunately we got Anthony Rapp back. *whew* If they do it, casting folks who've actually been in the show would be most logical, I'd think, artistically. There can't be many film stars who can Elphie-belt and do Glinda's opera-ness. And, frankly, if the ambiguous 'they' are worried about having big names in the movie, I'd think two Tony-winning actresses and their ample fanbases might help |

I think Britney Spears wants to be Elphaba. And on Glitter, Kristin's fan message board, they were saying that Hilary Duff could be Glinda. It's not true, but it's an interesting thought. Ugh, for pop stars doing Broadway shows when they can't do it vocally.  |

That's like when they stuck Mel B. from the Spice Girls in Rent last summer as Mimi. The woman couldn't sing the part, and she was a Latina New Yorker with a British accent.
Besides, Britney Spears and Hilary Duff would both be too young for the Act II parts, don't you think? Duff for the whole thing, actually...
But having a Beatle as the Wizard would be cool!

I hope that if there is a movie that they get cast members, maybe not the OBC, but cast members to play the roles. I hope whoever would be casting it would not put pop stars into the roles. They may be able to act the part. But the singing is such a different genre then pop that it would sound pretty akward.  |

On the Today Show this morning, Katie asked Kristin if she would ever go back to playing Glinda if given the chance. Kristin said she would but that her schedule is very busy right now, though there ARE talks of a movie. Just a little update. |
