first off, sorry if this has been addressed, I couldn't find a thread for it, but maybe I didn't look hard enough...
are the standbys always really to go at a moment's notice?, I mean when Eden took over for Idina when she couldn't finish the show due to health reasons, was Eden already in the Elphie getup or was she thrown in it during the intermission...
and I assume the standbys must be at each show...?

The standbys are there every night. I was there the night Idina had to leave. They made intermission longer so Eden could get her green stuff on. When I went on May 19, Laura was haning out in the lobby. I knew for sure that Kristin was performing, lol.

Stand-bys get paid to just BE there, and occasionally they get to perform too. -gyps

It's a very nice, yet terrible gig if you think about it. I mean you get money for not going anythng, and then sometimes you get to do something. But that's where it sucks, the sometimes part.

Yup, you're right Maria. It's cool to get paid for showing up but when you have to fill in for Idina or Kristin... the audience might not be as happy or whatever.

Standbys hafta be within a certain distance from the theatre throughout the show, so that they can be recalled within a moment's notice to pinch hit. That is their only role in the show--they're not in the ensemble too, unlike understudies (ie--Sean McCourt), who have roles in the ensemble when they're not pinch hitting for an absent lead.

Wow, I never knew that they only had one role and had to be within a certain distance from the theatre! Thanks for the info Chance!!

Anytime, darlin! Rumor has it that when Idina's voice blew during the ninth show post Tonys, Eden was down in TS getting coffee and they were like "uh....come back please." Then intermission was half an hour instead of 15 minutes so they could green her up and make sure Idina was ok.
Standby is actually kinda a cool gig. Understudy is tough because you hafta know your ensemble track AND the track of each and every role you cover--understudies don't necessarily cover just one role. However, swings have the most thankless job in theatre because you hafta know every track in the ensemble and be ready to go in at a moment's notice should an ensemble member be sick/have to cover a featured or lead role.

That is so true. My friend's friend (haha...this sounds like an urban legend) is a swing for 42nd Street, meaning that she has to know the parts for a large portion of that HUGE ensemble. Definitely a thankless but vital role...

Eden was down in TS getting coffee and they were like "uh....come back please." TS? I'm sorry, I'm from new jersey. But yea, stand-bys have it pretty easy. Get paid to lounge around, get fitted for gorgeous costumes, and are only green a small fraction of the time as the star. But it could get a bit annoying, and boring. But personally, stand-bys can be *better* than the stars (but you did not hear that from me or I will get eaten or tortured or something). Stand-bys rock. -gyps

Wouldn't it suck, if you were the standy-by for a lead role in any musical, and they get sick, so you're all excited to perform, but the audience is probably upset to not be seeing the star. Oh well...

^^^ Very random ^^^
Anyway, yeah, that's really cool. On the one hand, I'd love to be a stand-by - who wouldn't want to get paid for nothing? On the other hand, I wouldn't - when you do get to perform the audience is usually upset that they aren't seeing the star.
