WOW, what a day I had in NYC!! My fourth and BEST experience with Wicked to date...
I went with five of my friends who have never seen Wicked before, and TWO had also never been to NYC in general. That meant before lotto at 5:30 we hit a lot of the big "tourist-ey" places in and around Times Square... mostly dull for me since I've been in to New York many times before... but they really appreciated my impromptu "walking tour" of the theater district. ;D
When we got to the Gershwin at 5:15 my heart sank... SO many people were on the lotto line last night. It was insane. There were also already about 10 people on the cancellations line. Though I had initially thought all six of us would be able to try the lotto, we decided that my boyfriend Greg should get on the cancellations line, (he and I were the only two of the group who didn't have seats guaranteed for the evening performance) so our odds of getting in some way would be much better. Sadly, not one of the five of us trying lotto were pulled. At that point, I figured I'd come all the way to NYC from Albany for nothing...
Greg stayed on the line while I went to the stage door anyway to try and get some pre-show autographs. When I got there I met three other great girls, (one of whom is a member of Glitter!) and we chatted about our various experiences with Wicked... how much we wanted to meet Kristin... how fabulous Eden is... and even how sorry we were that Joel Grey was still sick (but thrilled at the chance to see Sean in the role). None of the other three knew the actors' faces, so they had ME identify the actors as they came along. *big blush*
First we met Carole Shelley, who was very gracious and sweet- even took a picture with me and signed my photo brochure. ;D She laughed when I told her how many times I'd seen the show and wished me good luck when I told her I was hoping to get tickets on the cancellations line. Next came Norbert who did the same (and made me seriously swoon. ) with a picture, signature and good luck wishes. I also got Michelle's signature, though she was in a BIG rush to get in to the theater and didn't have time to chat.
With the best wishes of both Fiyero and Madame Morrible on my side.... Greg came around the corner after Michelle left.. bearing two Row H seats!! (I don't believe I've squealed that loudly in a while)
Anyway, the show itself was delightful as usual. Eden absolutely floored me with that voice... and Sean was a wonderfully youthful Wizard (different interpretation, but I like it)... Randy also rocked, though he seemed a little off last night somehow. Blooper-wise, not much to report. Only that the "Tin Man"'s hat fell off during the March of the Witch Hunters (took a lovely tumble off the balcony and hit an ensemble member)... and Eden was crying so hard along with Kristin during "For Good" that Kristin wound up singing the last line of the song solo! I must say both ladies were REALLY in to the show last night... I never cried during the first three times I saw the show, and I was bawling last night.
Afterwards I dashed to the stage door and met up with the same girls from before the show. llam! We were pressed right up against the barrier, and were right up front when Sean came out, (Me: "I've seen the show four times now and it was great to see you get center stage finally." Sean: "Thank you! Though I almost fell in to the orchestra pit..." Didn't really notice that, but oh well). Also got a signature from Randy who was so careful to make sure he autographed for everyone who wanted one- impressive!!
When Eden came out she got a massive round of applause. She took a picture with me and signed my playbill, (SO nice). Lastly, and most excitingly (is that a word??) Kristin came out to a huge ovation. She didn't have time for pictures, but definately signed what people wanted her to sign. When she got to me, I pulled out my copy of Guideposts:
Me: Kristin, would you sign--?
Kristin: (identifying the magazine) Oooh!
Me: This article really means the world to me. It's so nice to have a Christian woman in the theater community.
Kristin: It's great to have faith, isn't it?!
And then she two-hand high fived me... *faints*
Wow. That was... uhm... lengthy... sorry about that. As soon as I have my pictures uploaded from my camera, I'll be sure to post them- they came out VERY well!
