ok i just saw wicked last weds (7/7) and it was amazing! but one thing that really bothered me was people eating during it. Its SO annoying to hear crunching and crinkling wrappers all around you while someone is up on stage singing there hearts out for you. it just seems really disrespectful of them and really distracting. If you buy food or drinks eat them during intermission only please, for everyone around you. It is degrading to the actors and theatre in general , to treat it more like a movie than a live performance.ok now that ive vented ( woo i feel better) i loved the show and am planning to go again as soon as possible ;D

I try to unwrap stuff before the show if I'm going to eat. But people are allowed to do it, so they're gonna do it however they see fit, unfortunately.

I didn't notice much about eating... but what really bugs me is the way people dress. Basketball shorts and tank tops are NOT the way to go at a Broadway performance!

Basketball shorts and tank tops are NOT the way to go at a Broadway performance! I agree! Come on people, it's Broadway! I always get extremely dressed up.

Well now that's a matter of opinion. If you dress way up to go to RENT, you're gonna look silly. And if you're doing the lotto, you probably don't have time to change. I usually go in decent-looking jeans and a Wicked shirt. But, hey, when you see it really, really often... I don't think I have enough nice clothes to last me if I were to dress up all the time.
And, for the record, if anyone was wondering the rules on food and drink in the Gershwin: No outside food or drink are allowed (though that one's easy to get around - just put it in your backpack). But the candy they sell there and the bottled water are allowed in the theatre, and are okay to be eaten in there. But, yes, its really REALLY annoying to hear crinkling wrappers. Especially during "For Good." grrr...

When I see Rent I don't dress up. I'll just wear jeans and a nice shirt (don't want to look too un-formal). But that's because Rent is this glitzy-glamour show. But when I see Wicked, I might wear a skirt or dress pants and heels. Depending on my mood.
Anyway, (what was the topic again? LLAM), I've never eaten during a show. Only during intermission. Because I know that it annoys me when others eat and crunch and such. So why would I do the same?

I always try to get dressed up when I go too. But I've been getting more casual lately. I think I got used to dressing up for Stratford cuz people still do there. If you wear jeans to Stratford, people are gonna be looking at you funny. Suits and dresses are still the dress code at Stratford. We're just snooty that way I couldn't believe it when I saw people in jeans at Rent and Wicked. But now I've gotten more casual since I was in NY. I figure if it's good enough for New Yorkers, it's okay for my community theatre But one thing I'll NEVER understand is eating during a show. Water? Sure. Cough candies? Sure, as long as they're unwrapped before the act starts. I'd rather have people eating cough candies than coughing throughout the show (and as an asthmatic, I know how annoyed-and with good reason- it makes people when you do that But why do people feel like they need to eat a whole freakin meal during a two hour show?!? Maybe this is more of a Stratford thing than a Gershwin thing, but I will forever be scarred by my experience of going to see West Side Story with my family and satching the family in front of us at the Avon Theatre eating MC DONALDS DURING THE SHOW. No. On so many levels, just.... no. This isn't a freakin movie. It's live theatre, it's costing a bundle just to be there, and you will NOT die if you wait til intermission or after the show to unwrap those snacks.

I'm sorry, but I love it...it's hilarous...so NOT classy at all....but still gotta love it...like honestly, what were they thinking...even in a movie...once I saw someone pull out like a chicken drumstick and was like WTF.....but since then I've been accustom to bringing in subs since I refuse to pay high theatre(movie) prices for crappy food....

The dressing up thing- I dunno, I've seen a whole RANGE of outfits at Broadway shows. Personally, when I go to the city, I'm there for the day, so I don't dress up extremely fancy since I know I'll be walking around for 8+ hours. I need to wear sneakers or at least flats because all that walking would be murder in dress shoes. Last time I went I wore some nice black pants and a Wicked t-shirt with running shoes. I don't think I looked too bad. It's not a fancy cocktail evening gown and heels, but it's not a greasy oversized t-shirt and ripped jeans either. I think comfort should be a consideration when going to a show too. To relate this back to the topic- if you're comfortable, you're less likely to cause distractions to other audience members. Not to mention, I think you'll enjoy the show more since your mind isn't distracted by other things like the straps of your dress, sitting on your skirt wrong or tight, painful shoes. [[ llam- Call it the "Elphaba" or the "Glinda" approaches to seeing a Broadway show. ]]

Me and my mom were talking about what I was going to wear to see Wicked and I was talking about this post and she was like "People wear tank tops to Wicked?! The horrible!" So lol. My view is that as well. You want to look nice.
