This is a Fiyeraba (tm Aly) fic, but Glinda is not forgotten. It starts right after " Defying Gravity". The rating is G for now, but that could change. Thanks to Aly and Cate for their imput! Remember, reviews are my MC
Glinda's brain had never had so much in it at one time. She wasn't quite sure what to make of everything. In 26 hours she had seen the Emerald City, met the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, seen monkeys sprout wings, and lost her best friend.
Eyes glazed, Glinda traveled via the Wizard's private coach back to Shiz. Madame Morrible had tried to dissuade her from returning to Shiz, saying the shock to her had been so great she should not be alone. Glinda knew if Elphaba was there, she would tell her Morrible didn't want her alone so she couldn't change her mind.
Elphaba. Oh her poor sweet Elphaba, with her big heart and morals and ideas.
"See where your ideas got you, Elphie?" Glinda whispered, sniffing back tears. She had been crying since she left the palace. No, that was wrong. She had been crying since she had told Elphie she wouldn't be going with her. It seemed like a dream, what had happened after that, how the guards had burst in and Elphaba had saved her, flying out of the palace attic and high above the Emerald City, challenging the Wizard and the citizens of Oz to bring her down. Then she had flown off with a laugh like Glinda had never heard her laugh. Come to think of it, Glinda hadn't heard Elphie laugh much, ever. She was always so serious.
After Elphie had flown away, the guards had taken Glinda back to the Wizard's throne room, where he and Morrible had made her an offer she couldn't refuse. They told her how the world would come to know what had transpired that day. How Glinda had been summoned to the palace and Elphaba had been hiding to cause something terrible to happen to them all, and how Glinda's "bravery" and "heroism" would be marveled at and celebrated by all of Oz. Ozians everywhere would love her. She would forever be henceforth known as Glinda the Good Witch.
On one condition: Glinda, on pain of death, or worse, public humiliation, could never tell a living (or dead) soul what had actually gone on in the palace that day.
And Glinda had agreed.
"I hope you're happy how you'd grovel in submission to feed your own ambition," her green friend had accused. She could hear her voice ringing on the wind.
"You were right, Elphie," Glinda murmured, wiping the tears from her eyes, biding them to fall and cleanse her of such a heinous betrayal.
"Where to, miss?" The driver asked, surprising Glinda.
She cleared her throat. " Didn't the Wizard tell you? Shiz University."
"I know that, miss," the driver said, trying to hide his impatience. "We are almost there. I wanted to know where on campus you would like to be taken."
"Oh," Glinda murmured, embarrassed. Where could she go? Back to their room, where she and Elphaba had shared secrets, studied, talked, slept? No. It was too soon. Where else could she....
"Fiyero!" She exclaimed, almost without thinking.
"Excuse me?" the driver asked.
"Ozma Towers," she said, the urgency in her voice palpable.
It seemed almost a tick tock later that she arrived at Fiyero's dorm. In a daze, she thanked the driver and nearly stumbled out of the cab and into the building's lobby.
A field mouse sat at the information desk and Glinda nearly burst into tears.
"Can I help you?" the mouse asked.
"I, I n-need to see...." Glinda said, trying to fight against the torrents that threatened. She felt as though the world was closing in on her.
"Yes?" The mouse demanded, rather impatiently.
"Fiyero. Fiyero T-Tigular."
"It's rather late," the mouse began with a frown. "I'm sure his highness doesn't want to be disturbed. If you come back tomorrow, I'm sure..."
Just then, Glinda saw Fiyero coming down the Grand Stairwell, looking tired and worried. His eyes widened in surprise when he saw her. "Glinda?!"
"Fiyero!" Glinda cried, racing past the field mouse and throwing herself into his arms. The minute she felt his arms around her, all semblance of composure she had been able to maintain vanished. She buried her face in his neck and wept with bitter, guttural sobs. Her tiny frame shook from the violence of it and Fiyero held her as tightly as he could, stunned into silence by her action.
He exchanged glances with the perpetually annoyed Field Mouse and searched the room for Elphaba. Where was she? Had they not gone to the Emerald City together?
"Ga--Glinda," Fiyero murmured, smoothing her fine blonde hair and rubbing her back. "What's wrong, my sweet?"
"Oh Fiyero, dearest," Glinda managed between sobs. "It's all so awful. We were at the Emerald City and then we saw the Wizard and then Elphaba..." Her cries became intense once more. "A-a-and the monkeys...there were wings...and she was so angry....and I ran after her....the guards....tried to stop her....she flew away...oh Fiyero! I've betrayed her! How could I?" With that, her tears overtook her and she nearly crumpled.
Quickly, Fiyero scooped her into his arms, trying to make sense of her words. He carried the weeping woman up the Grand Stairwell to his room. Luckily, it was late, so there were few of the other boys in the hallway. He had his own private sweet, as being a Winkie Prince did have it's privileges, so there were no annoying roommates to deal with. He set her on his bed and pulled the duvet over her. Quickly, he fetched her a glass of water, which he held for her while she sipped slowly once her sobbing calmed down. She cried herself to sleep, not saying much, and Fiyero sat in a chair across from his bed, watching her sleep, the room bathed only in the light of the moon.
It was a few hours before Fiyero found out what had happened. Boq, the annoying Munchkin boy Glinda had tricked into dating Nessarose, was the one who told him. Until that point, Fiyero had thought Elphaba had grown wings and made monkeys appear. It was Boq who told him that Elphaba had followed Glinda to the Emerald City and flown into a rage when the Wizard named Glinda his Magic Grand Vizier, and in her rage, Elphie had maimed all the Wizard's monkeys and given them wings. And while Fiyero knew that Elphaba had *not* followed Glinda to the Emerald City, he assumed it was somewhat closer to the truth than what Glinda hadn't been able to tell him.
"Where is Elphaba now?" Fiyero asked, trying to keep his voice neutral.
"They say she enchanted a broom and flew away. The Wizard's Guards are hunting for her right now. Say, have you seen Glinda? I'd like to congratulate her and--"
"No," Fiyero said abruptly, cutting the boy off. "Excuse me Biq." He returned to his room, and found Glinda still sleeping fitfully. Sighing, he sat on the edge of the bed, his head in his hands.
Looking out into the dark night, Fiyero whispered, "Where are you, Elphie?"
