Pink and Green
Galinda flounced into her chair and glanced at her light pink parchment. “1000 words on the Industrialization of Oz and the Discoveries that Precipified it” was written across the top in her round, swirling handwriting. Gazing distractedly across the room, Galinda saw her serious green roomate scratching away at a thick piece of ratty parchment nearly filled with writing, showing a dedication to this pointless paper Galinda could not comprehend. Elphaba must have noticed her staring, because she suddenly paused and caught her eye. Galinda turned away, rolling her blue eyes with a little sigh that was more for effect than out of emotion, and tried once again and unsuccesfully to interest herself in writing this paper.
Suddenly there was a sound of footsteps in the corridor outside the room, and Galinda hopped up to check her blonde curls in the mirror as someone knocked on their door. “Com-ing!” she cooed, and struck her cutest little pose as she opened the door. Much to her surprise, she came face to face with Fiyero, who was nonchalantly leaning against their doorframe. “Why, hello there!” she twittered, slightly embarassed to see him at their door in the girls dormitory. “How-what are you doing here?”
He smiled slightly in that way that made her even more happy to be Galinda. “Hello Miss Galinda. I’m here to see if you two wanted to come into town tonight.”
“Us two?” said Galinda, without realizing what she had said. Suddenly she remembered her emerald colored roomate, who had interestingly enough put down her book and was sitting up attentively. “Oh, you are refering to Miss Elphaba. Well, I’m sure she wouldn’t want to join us. I mean, really, Fiyero...”
Fiyero’s eyes narrowed at the little blonde. “Maybe we should let Miss Elphaba make her own decisions,” he said, calmly. “Miss Elphaba, would you care to accompany my friends and I into town tonight?”
Elphaba tried not to feel excited. This had to be some sort of trick. Why would anyone, especially someone like Fiyero, want to invite her anywhere? ...On the other hand, she did wish to have friends. Sealing herself off wasn’t always that enjoyable. When your only friends are books from time to time you tend to wonder what the lives of the others, such as Galinda and Fiyero, are like. And maybe this new student, suddenly catapulted into the height of popularity, actually had some good intentions. Maybe he, unlike Galinda and her powderpuff companions, actually had the manners to not want to exclude her. Maybe...
“I actually think I would enjoy that,” Elphaba said, staring at her lap. Galinda gave a little gasp, shocked that her anti-social roomate actually wanted to go out somewhere. “Well!” she said, regaining her bubbly composure and turning back to Fiyero, “We’ll meet you at the gate around 6:30?”
“Sounds perfect,” he replied, and turned to leave. Galinda quickly shut the door.
“Well, well, well! Miss Elphaba! Since when do you ditch your books for the rest of us? I mean, we always thought you were too good for us, with your...”
“Stop it,” said Elphaba forcefully, still staring at her lap. And Galinda wondered why she tended to shy away from her? “You know what, I don’t even know why I said I would go...I mean, it was a stupid idea...”
“No!” bubbled Galinda, clasping her hands together. “It’s a great idea!” Galinda properly moved a few peices of parchment to the side and sat down next to Elphaba on her bed. “I’m glad you finally are making an effort to get to know me and my friends. I’m not all that you see me as at first glance, Miss Elphaba. After all,” she said, hopping up, “I would hope that at least you would look beyond the surface!” Elphaba stifled a sarcastic laugh as Galinda twirled over and opened her wardrobe.
“But, speaking of appearances,” said Galinda, “I have to get ready!” She pulled out first one dress, then another, holding them up against her petite body reflected in the mirror. “Do you think I should wear the lilac or the peach?”
Elphaba glanced at her excited roomate, and then at the simple time keeper on her desk. “Galinda, its only 4:30! We don’t have to go for two whole hours. And I’m sure you’ll look fine in either...frock.”
“Two whole hours? Dear Miss Elphaba, I need all the swankifying time I can get!” Galinda set the two gowns on her bed and faced her green roomie, hands on her hips in mock rage. “And what, dare I ask, are you planning on wearing this evening?”
Elphaba screwed up her face and looked down at whatever it was she was wearing that day. It was a thick black dress, rough to the touch and crudely made, but good for keeping water, and people, repelled. “What I’m wearing now-this, I guess.”
A bemused smirk came over Galinda’s pretty face. “You have to be kidding me.” When Elphaba held her gaze uncompromisingly, Galinda giggled. “Oh come on Miss Elphaba. Let’s see what you have in your closet to wear?” Opening the doors to her roomate’s wardrobe, Galinda found a scarce few dresses hanging there sadly, all very close to the one Elphaba was wearing at that very moment: rough, black, and anything but what Galinda deemed acceptable for a trip to town. Galinda quickly closed the closet doors, temporarily detered. “Hmm! How about you wear one of my dresses?” Elphaba looked up at Galinda from over the tops of her glasses, then scanned the yellow dress with crinolines underneath that Galinda was wearing. “Well, not this one, odviously!” said Galinda. “Something more you, but more of a me you, you know?” Galinda turned towards her own closet and seemed not to notice as Elphaba tried to supress skeptical laughter at what she had just tried to say. “Aha!” said Galinda, emerging from her own bulging wardrobe. “This is so...a Galinda-fied Elphaba, no?”
The dress the blonde held up for her inspection was a deep green, several shades darker than Elphaba’s own skin color. The dress was swirled with some sort of material that made it shimmer, and she couldn’t help but stare. “Galinda, I can’t wear that dress...”
“Nonsense!” she replied. “Of course you can. Now try it on before I change my mind!”
Elphaba quickly turned her back and modestly changed out of her simple black dress and into Galinda’s green wonder. Turning around, she caught her reflection in the mirror, and gasped. The dress was different on Elphaba than it would have been on Galinda, which was not a bad thing. The green silk was soft against her lighter green skin, and what would have been a long dress on Galinda was shorter and more relaxed on Elphaba. The dress was fitted, but flared slightly into an skirt that ended below her green knees. Galinda turned around, holding a large purple ribbon in her hand, and caught sight of her roomate.
“Elphaba!” she twittered, coming over to inspect her newly Galindafied roomie. “You look like a magical artichoke! Its fantasmic!”
A faint darkening could be seen on Elphaba’s green cheeks. “It’s a pretty dress.”
“And I’m SO glad I got you to wear it! Now come on Elphaba, please please PLEASE put your hair down.” Galinda proceeded to untwist Elphaba’s black braids into long shiny waves. “There! Much better,” she said, surveying her work. “And now we really must go Miss Elphaba, if we wish to be on time.”
