Chapter One

Elphaba and Glinda, two best friends, for that was the way it was. Nothing could separate them. Nothing but a bucket of water and the Land of Oz.

Elphaba could never remember such a feeling of great elation in her entire life. As the curtain rose to reveal “Wizomania”, she thought of every time that her father seemed embarrassed to be seen with his own daughter and to every time Nessa looked upon her with contempt. All her hard work was finally going to pay off.

Elphaba softly mumbled to herself, “Oh, what a pair we’ll be, the Wizard and I.”
“What did you say, Elphie?”, Glinda asked.
“Oh nothing important,” Elphaba replied, “Come on, we better hurry. We don’t want to be late to meet the Wizard.”

“No, no, no. This cannot be happening. Calm down, Elphaba. It was just a misunderstanding. He didn’t mean for anything to happen to that poor monkey. It was just an accident.” But Elphaba knew deep down that all her hopes and dreams had just come crashing down all around her. She tried to ignore Glinda’s incessant droning as a plan began to formulate in her head.

Elphaba began chanting, “Ah May Ah Tay Ah Tum Ditum...”
“ What are you doing? Stop it ” Glinda screamed, “ That's what started all this in the first place... that hideous levitation spell STOP ”

Elphie stopped. She had no intention of leaving with her first and possibly only best friend hating her. Besides, her incantation was not in vain.
“Well... Where are your wings? Maybe you're not as powerful as you think you are,” Glinda added sarcastically.
However, she was soon silenced as she caught a glimpse of a broomstick floating by her.
Elphaba cried out in triumph, “I told you, Glinda... I did it, I tell ya ”

“I really do hope you’re happy.” Glinda wiped a tear from her eye as she saw what appeared to be just a black dot speed off into the setting sun. She thought about what Elphie had just told her. “Some things I cannot change, but ‘till I try, I’ll never know.” It was then that Glinda firmly resolved, “I have to be strong...If not for me for Elphaba.” But somehow, Glinda knew that she would meet her greenified friend again.

Chapter 2

The world seemed to belong to Elphaba as she skimmed the surface of the trees. As she flew across the Vinkus, she felt that nothing could ever stop her. However, along with her great delight at finally being free came pangs of regret and sadness. She had left Nessa all along for the first time. Besides, Elphaba could only imagine how angry her father would be. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he just fell down dead of a broken heart, now that I’ve ‘wrecked’ the family’s good name,” Elphaba thought to herself.

However, those were the least of her cares. Elphie could only think of him. She knew that she would probably never be that kind of girl that he could love, but she still found herself thinking of him constantly ever since the day when they rescued that lion cub.

“Fiyero,” Elphaba whispered, the word flowing softly and rhythmically across her lips.

No matter how hard she tried to focus on the Animals that needed help, the image of Yero dancing the night away at the Ozdust kept returning to her mind.

Glinda had barely gotten an hour of sleep when she heard people shouting for her outside her door. Suddenly Madame Morrible, Oz’s new press secretary barged in and called her outside. Glinda was immediately bombarded with question after question.

“Miss Glinda, what happened in there?”
“Is the Wizard alright?”
“What was that hideous thing that flew from the Wizard’s palace?”

“That hideous thing happens to be,” she started. Then she remembered the vow she had made to stay strong for Elphie. She had to have the public on her side. Then maybe she could gain enough power to help her friend overcome the Wizard. She just had to stay calm and begin to repair Elphie’s public image. “She is..”

But Madame Morrible cut in, “Citizens of Oz, there is an enemy that must be found and captured! Believe nothing she says. She's evil. Responsible for the mutilation of these poor, innocent monkeys! Her green skin is but an outward manifestation of her twisted nature! This distortion... this repulsion... this... Wicked Witch ”

Immediately panic set in, and soon there was no one in the Emerald City, or all of Oz for that matter, who hadn’t been affected by the Wizard’s propaganda. Glinda knew that she would have to work extra hard to keep the Wizard from winning this battle. Well, if Morrible and the Wizard could spread rumors, so could she. Nothing that would harm them, but something that could make all the difference in the battle to save the only friend who ever mattered to her.

In those short few days, Galinda had changed to Glinda, and now to Glinda the Good.

Fiyero woke with a start. He had fallen asleep many times in History class before, but somehow he felt different. Usually he drifted softly away in a dreamless sleep, but something had changed within him. He could vaguely remember his dream. He remembered falling and falling until he fell into a cornfield. Suddenly birds were coming from every corning of Oz to peck at him and eat the corn. Suddenly a green and black blur dashed across the sky on what looked like a flying broomstick and picked him from the field and carried him to safety.

“Fabala?” he thought. “I must be going crazy! Cornfields, flying broomsticks...and Elphaba.”

Suddenly, the remainder of his dream came back to him as though someone splashed him with a bucket of ice water. Just after Elphie had gotten him to safety, some invisible force seemed to take hold of her and pull her away from him. She was pulled down into the surface of the earth, while all around her, bubbles came swirling up. All that was left of Fabala was her hat, a large book, and a small green bottle. Then everything went black.

Fiyero looked around and found Shiz in a state of panic. He grabbed a copy of “The Shiz Chronicle” and gasped at the headline: “Where Will She Strike Next?” There was Elphie’s picture, but instead of Elphaba Thropp, she was referred to as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Fiyero immediately packed his bags and headed for the Emerald City, before even reading the entire article. “Maybe the Wizard can help,” he prayed.
