Wow no Joel Grey or Carole Shelley... that's kinda a shocker. Oh well Wicked still leads the pack and both our gals got their nominations so it's a happy day ;D

I think it's funny that Wicked got nominated for choreography again. Did we miss some special dance in the play?

I think it's funny that Wicked got nominated for choreography again. Did we miss some special dance in the play? While you may not think WICKED's choreography is great, you have to keep in mind, it's original. And the chorus does a lot of it (DLT, when Elphie rescues the cub, etc...). Granted not all of it looks good (i.e.: Elphie's walk in WITF --- what is Oz is that about??) but it's interesting... and interesting is good. And good translates into Tony Nom, at least in this case. Yay for both girls! And the whole cast really. 10! w00t. That calls for some Winkie hunting. *grabs big butterfly net and searches for YtWWP*

YAY!! We got 10! That's awesome. Literally, I raced to the computer the second I got into Creative Writing class. This is so swankified!

Choreography generally makes me scratch my head too... though I saw an interview with Wayne Cilento not too long ago in which he explained the dances are supposed to be "not of this world". He felt Ozians danced much differently than we do... so he invented choreography accordingly.
And as far as Fiyero's dance, I have a possibility- the last time I saw Wicked it crossed my mind that Fiyero's unique floppy-arm dance style is probably designed to be reminiscent of the dancing of the Scarecrow in the movie. *shrugs* Maybe?

He felt Ozians danced much differently than we do... so he invented choreography accordingly. So we did miss something: the definition of choreography. So I guess that nomination fits.

Thank Goodness!
Yay for all of the much-deserved nominations!
Does Wicked have the most this year? Did somebody already post about that?

Congratulotions to "Wicked!" All noms are VERY well-deserved! About the choreography thing: I love the choreogrophy during "DTL." And "OSD" has good choreography too. You don't have to dance to have good choreography (believe me). Everything from Elphie's arm movements in "Defying Gravity" to just the way someone walks or moves is choreography. Which is also known as musical staging.

Here are the reactions from Dee (I love the last thing she says), Stephen, Cheno and Winnie, respectively:
Idina Menzel Best Actress in a Musical Nominee for Wicked "I didn't get up early. I have to sleep! I don't want to lose my voice! So I woke up at like 11:15 and my husband told me. It's been a great morning. Of course, everybody's so excited. It's been a long process for the whole Wicked crew. It's been years of putting this together, so when something actually comes to fruition, it's amazing. It sounds so stupid, but I'm just happy to be nominated with so many incredible people. And I'm also excited that we're filling the Gershwin every night. That's the best testament to the success of the show--that's a big ass theater! Now I have to choose a dress. It won't be green and it probably won't be black. I hope that they'll recognize me!"
Stephen Schwartz Best Original Score Nominee for Wicked "I'm delighted that the show was recognized. Obviously, there were some oversights that I feel bad about. Some people who did really good work in our show didn't get recognized and to be perfectly honest, people from other shows who did really good work didn't get nominated either. But I'm still very happy. Doing an original musical on Broadway is extremely challenging and we had a lot of rough waters to navigate. To come through them well and to be recognized now with all the nominations is amazing. This is an unusually strong year. There are some years where some things are foregone in terms of one big musical that'll come in and win everything. But this year, there are a lot of strengths. I'm glad I'm not a betting man, or someone that has to set the odds. In many places, it's very tough to call!"
Kristin Chenoweth Best Actress in a Musical Nominee for Wicked "I am so happy. I was in bed asleep. I said to my friend, Anne, 'Please call me and wake me up if it happens.' And she did. Then my agent and my manager called, so I got up three times. I sort of forgot--I was doing Candide all last week, so I thought I'm not even going to get nervous for this! In my groggy state, I just said I was so happy. I called my mom in Texas, and she already knew! She was on the Internet. I'm thrilled that the show got so many nominations!"
Winnie Holzman Best Book of a Musical Nominee for Wicked "I woke up this morning and had acupuncture. There's a doctor in Tarrytown that I heard about from a friend of mine who was supposed to be excellent. So I had my appointment this morning and it was great--I'm completely relaxed! The nomination is, of course, very nice. The real thrill for me is the opportunity to have a show on Broadway that is so embraced by the audiences. To have them clearly love it so much is so rewarding. I don't know how to describe it, but it's so fulfilling. Not to pooh-pooh the awards, but truly that is the reward. It's nice to get nominated but it's really wonderful to feel like people are happy and excited about your show. It's a real honor. But I'm also excited to go to all of the parties!"

hey all...I know I've been totally absent for a while (I'm SOOO busy with teaching now), but I had to come and add my 2 cents worth about the Tonys. I'm SOOO excited for Wicked!! I got my email from the Tony site this morning while the kids were taking a math test and I nearly jumped for joy right out of my seat! I'm glad Kristin and Idina were both nominated equally, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for both of them. I can't wait to see the show again in July Rachel
